Neighbors dislike dirt stockpile

Residents of one West Athens neighborhood recently found themselves on the receiving end of the dirt excavated during the construction of a new $45 million University of Georgia special collections library.

Some residents of Price Avenue, off of Sunset Drive, have taken to calling the mound "Mount Sunset," but the dirt pile that has sprung up on a pair of vacant lots on the quiet residential street is anything but picturesque, said Jamie Ruskie, who lives at 265 Sunset Drive and manages the Land Use Clinic at the UGA School of Law.

"We think it's potentially a nuisance and certainly it violates the zoning code," Ruskie said, describing the pile that grew to about 40 feet tall. "We really think he's using that lot for dirt storage. There's no way they're using all of that dirt on that site."

Developer Ashley Hill started stockpiling the dirt on the lots the first week of March, according to neighbors. Hill plans to use the dirt to build up the lots, he said. They already are fairly level, but he wants the houses to be above grade so he can install
